GOT A QUESTION?

Frequently Asked Questions

Booking & Payment

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. Anyone can seek treatment from a psychologist. However, a valid referral from a GP, a paediatrician or a psychiatrist is needed if you would like to receive a Medicare rebate.

Can I get a Medicare rebate?

Yes. In order to access this payment visit your GP and ask about having a mental health care plan. This plan allows you to receive Medicare rebates for six sessions.  After six sessions the referring doctor must complete a review and can request an additional four sessions to be rebated through Medicare.  Sessions are capped at ten visits per calendar year.  However, a new referral can be considered for the next calendar year. You can find out more about Medicare rebates for mental health care here.

Can I use my Private Health and Medicare rebates in the same calendar year?

Yes. For different sessions. For example, you can get a Medicare Rebate (if you have a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan referral) for a session and for another session you can use your Health fund card.

I already have a Mental Health Treatment Plan but I want to see a different psychologist to the one on the plan. Is this possible?

Yes. You can see any psychologist on your plan. Just bring it along with you. If you have seen another psychologist elsewhere, it is really helpful if they can provide a handover letter including how many sessions you had with them. And, in what calendar year

How many appointments do you recommend booking?

We recommend booking 4 or 5 appointments in advance to secure the session times and frequency between sessions that best suit you.

What is your cancellation policy?

When appointments are booked, the psychologist reserves the whole hour especially for you.  Therefore we require 48 hours notice and the following cancellation policy is in place to allow us to offer the allocated time to another person who may be on a waiting list for that appointment.

  • A $65 fee will be charged for cancellation with less than 48 hours notice.
  • A $135 fee will be charged for cancellation with less than 24 hours notice.
  • The FULL FEE will be charged for an appointment that has been missed with less than two hours notice (non-attendance).

We understand that sometimes you may be unable to keep an appointment because of sudden illness or an unexpected personal emergency. If this happens to you, please contact us as soon as possible to explain the situation.  You may call The Work Well at any time, even after hours, as we do have an answering service that allows you to leave a message.

The APS recommended cancellation fees are:

  • 0-24 hours notice: Full fee
  • 24-48 hours notice: 50% of fee
  • 48 hours – 7 days notice: 25% of fee

General questions

What is the typical program length for therapy?

There is no clear answer to this question. Generally, the longer the problem has been present the longer therapy tends to take. If you have only recently begun to experience psychological distress you are more likely to make rapid recoveries in therapy. If you have a longer-term history of psychological problems and/or more complex difficulties, you may require longer-term therapy in order to achieve your goals.

What about confidentiality?

The conversations you have with your psychologist are confidential, and there are strict penalties when this duty is breached. However, this confidentiality is not absolute, and there are a number of specific situations in which confidentiality can be breached by the psychologist. These include:

  • Court subpoena.
  • Immediate threat of harm to self or others.
  • Insurance companies can request information regarding your treatment. Note: however that this information will only be provided with your written consent.
  • Supervision / second opinion – Under national law, registered psychologists are required to seek supervision from a colleague approximately once a month to discuss their practice. It is possible that some aspects of your treatment will be discussed with another psychologist.
How should I prepare for my first session?

It’s not unusual when attending psychology for the first time to feel nervous and be unsure about what to expect. Sometimes this anxiety can cause you to feel confused or forget information. It may help to write down a few notes or make a mind-map to bring with you. Take some time to think about what you hope to get from therapy, how you have been feeling, what you have already tried to feel better, and the names of any medications you are taking. You may bring a support person to the session if you feel that would be helpful

Where can I have sessions?

Face-to-face sessions are available at therapy rooms in Paddington, Qld. Sessions are also available for clients Australia-wide via Zoom or phone.
