The Pause That Allows a Different Path

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
— Viktor Frankl

Most of us move through life responding quickly — often automatically — to the things that happen around us. A moment of conflict. A feeling of overwhelm. A flash of shame, or irritation, or sadness. These moments arrive suddenly, and our reactions often follow before we even realise it.

But what if there was another way?

Viktor Frankl reminds us that between stimulus and response, there is a space. And in that space lies the possibility of something different — something more aligned, more conscious, more free.

This blog is about that pause: the one that can quietly change everything.

The Narratives Beneath Our Reactions

Each of us carries stories. Some are spoken aloud, others remain buried beneath the surface. These stories often take the shape of core beliefs:

  • “I must be perfect to be accepted.”
  • “My needs don’t matter.”
  • “People always leave.”
  • “If I show who I am, I’ll be rejected.”

These beliefs aren’t random. They tend to form early, shaped by our environment, our caregivers, our culture. Over time, they become internal maps — guiding how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we move through the world. But because they are familiar, they can be difficult to notice.

Until we pause.

When we learn to slow down — even briefly — we can begin to observe our reactions, rather than be driven by them. We can ask: Is this belief really true? Is this reaction really authentically mine? From there, something new becomes possible.

The Space Where Change Begins

You don’t need to overhaul your entire life to begin this process. It starts with gentle, curious noticing. A willingness to explore:

  • What patterns keep showing up?
  • What do I feel in moments of reactivity?
  • What do I believe about myself in those moments?
  • What part of me is being activated — and why?

This is not about judgment. It’s about understanding. The moment we begin to understand what drives us, we also begin to reclaim choice. And with that, we open the door to a different path.

An Invitation to Reflect

If you’re noticing a desire to understand yourself more deeply — to explore the space between what happens and how you respond — I invite you to reach out. Whether you’re feeling stuck in old patterns or simply curious about what else might be possible, this kind of reflection can be a powerful place to begin.

Sometimes, a small pause is all it takes to change direction.
